The Nazca lines and geoglyphs cover the arid plains situated between the Pacific Ocean and the coastal mountains in the south-west of Peru.
They cover an area of approximately 500 square km (200 sq miles) between the towns of Nazca and Palpa on the Pampas de Jumana. However, it should be noted that lines and drawings have also been discovered further afield.
The nearest large town is Nazca itself which has a population of 53,000 and is located 20 km to the south of the main concentration of the lines.
The regional capital is Ica 135 km (83 miles) to the north-west of Nazca, and Peru's capital city of Lima is 395 km (246 miles) to the north of Nazca.
